  3.  Welcome to the Hornet Underground CDROM.
  4.  
  5.  If a file ends in .arj, .a01, .a02, etc., it means that the demo is split
  6.  across several files.  Within the "view" program, simply install the .arj
  7.  file first and then all subsequent .a0x files in order.
  8.  
  9.  For someone not in the demo "scene", the productions on this disc might
  10.  seem a bit confusing.  How do I make my system work with demos?  Why
  11.  don't they run with my Sound Blaster?  Why don't they run under Windows?
  12.  Included in the root directory of this CD is a file called demos.faq.
  13.  This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) will answer many or all of your
  14.  questions.

  18.  A bit of information is required to understand how the files on this
  19.  disc are described.
  20.  
  21.  _____Types of Files
  22.  
  23.  Demos : Demos are full sized productions, containing graphics and a full
  24.  soundtrack. They typically range from 500k to 4meg in size.  Modern
  25.  demos are often released only at parties.
  26.  
  27.  64k Intros : These productions are smaller versions of demos.  They
  28.  still contain music and graphics even though they are only 64k in size!
  29.  They are one of the more popular forms of demos today.
  30.  
  31.  4k Intros : These productions are the smallest of all.  4k intros are
  32.  can be, at maximum size, 4096 bytes.  In general, 4k intros have no
  33.  music or graphics, only code-based effects.  Modern 4k intros are
  34.  actually starting to incorporate music!

  36.  Here are a list of abbreviations we use in our description files for
  37.  different types of files:

  47.  _____Where are Demos Released?
  48.  
  49.  In the olden days (before 1993), most demos were just released on the
  50.  spur of the moment.  Suddenly a group would become inspired, make a
  51.  demo, and release it to the public.
  52.  
  53.  In modern times, most of the good demos are saved for parties.  "Party"
  54.  is simply demo scene slang for a convention or gathering.  At parties,
  55.  competitions are held.  These compos determine who entered the best
  56.  demo, 64k intro, 4k intro, etc.
  57.  
  58.  For description purposes, Hornet has made a set of 3-6 character
  59.  abbreviations -- one for each party.  By using these abbreviations in
  60.  descriptions, anyone can quickly determine what party a demo was
  61.  released at.

  155.  
  156.  Hornet rates all productions that are uploaded to its archive.  We do
  157.  this so that people who don't have infinite time can easily see what the
  158.  best uploads of the week were.
  159.  
  160.  Ratings vary from "+" (0.5 stars) to "*****" (5.0 stars).  The more
  161.  stars, the better the production.  Files rated "[n/a]" mean that we
  162.  couldn't get the demo to run (locked up or crashed the system).  Files
  163.  rated "[rip]" mean that material from the production was stolen from
  164.  someone else or blatantly miscredited.  A rating of "[rip]" is a very
  165.  bad thing to get.

  169.  Each directory on this CD has a file called 00_index.txt that describes
  170.  the contents of the current directory.  Here is an explanation of the

  215. Quick Start Instructions:

  217.   MSDOS Quick Start:
  218.     Change to your CDROM drive and type "view".
  219.     Example:
  220.           C:\> D:
  221.           D:\> view
  222.  
  223.   Windows 3.1/NT:
  224.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  225.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  226.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.

  228.   Windows 95:
  229.     Insert the cdrom into the cdrom drive.  This will automatically
  230.     start a CDROM browser program called WinView.
  231.     Alternatively, you can also install the program group and icon
  232.     by selecting the "Start" menu and choosing "Run".  At the Run
  233.     box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.

  235. Using the 00_INDEX.HTM:

  237. We have included 00_index.htm files so the user may use a Web browser
  238. to view our disc.

  240. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  241. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.

  243. For example, in Netscape/Mosaic:

  245.         1) Choose File/Open File (or File/Open Local File with Mosaic)
  246.         2) Choose your CDROM Drive under "Drives"
  247.         3) Select the 00_index.htm file

  250. The 00_index.htm files have been tested under Netscape 1.1 (Windows,
  251. Macintosh, and FreeBSD), Netscape 1.22 (Windows), Netscape 2.0b2,
  252. Mosaic 2.00 (Final Beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  258. To make browsing the disc easier, we have included the program WinView
  259. for Windows, and the program VIEW for MSDOS on the CDROM.  These programs
  260. allow you to page through index files, browse through directories on the
  261. CD, view documentations and uncompress/install the program(s) you want
  262. onto your hard disk.
